Support DMPulse

Why support DMPulse?
Your dollars allow us to pay our royalty payment to SoundExchange and purchase the music you hear on DMPulse!

Soundexchange is the organization that gathers performance royalty fees from internet radio and pays the artists we play.  Did you know, each month we submit a report to Soundexchange detailing each song we play on DMPulse? Soundexchange aggregates our report with everyone else to determine each individual artist's share of the performance royalty payments. So, every time you hear a song on DMPulse, the artist is receiving a royalty payment! In 2010, DMPulse paid $2,000 to Soundexchange, and we are set to make another $2,000 payment in January. Help DMPulse support the artists we play by making a donation today!

DMPulse Kickstarter project!

Kickstarting begins now!

Our project to launch a commercial-free audio stream you can access without a subscription to Live365 is live! During the next 30 days, we will attempt to raise $2,000 to launch this new stream in 2011.

Recall over the past year that you have help guide and shape our path forward, from continuing the station at this time last year, to our organization as a non-profit. This next project is another step forward for DMPulse. Based on listener's interest in having a DMPulse stream free of advertising, we are launching this project via Kickstarter.com.

Please view the video, read through the project description and rewards. I hope you will considering supporting this project, and take advantage of the rewards we are offering our backers.

Please note, funding for Kickstarter projects is all-or-nothing. Backers credit cards are only charged if and when the $2,000 goal is reached. Thank you for supporting the station, being such loyal listeners and helping us continue to discover great music together!

New Listener Survey! Kickstarter Project Rewards!

We are launching a project on Kickstarter.com to create a commercial-free audio stream you can access without a subscription to Live365!

In exchange for backing the project, you can choose to select specific rewards. Rewards are items or unique experiences that inspire support for the project. Here's where you come in...help us determine what rewards to offer and at what dollar amount we should offer the reward!

It is important for these rewards to be fun!  Based on previous listeners surveys, I think we have several creative reward ideas that allow you to be actively involved with the station.  For example:

Pay for a Day: choose 24 songs from our music library to be played during your day, with your backing being recognized on-air throughout the day.

Buy the Hour: program an entire hour of DMPulse, choosing all songs played that hour from our music library of more than 1,600 songs!  Imagine having control of one entire hour of our radio station!

Music Meeting:  attend our virtual music meeting where you will be able to hear songs being considered for airplay.  Have you ever heard of a radio station opening the meeting where the music decisions are made to listeners?  DMPulse is breaking new ground here!  Have access to new music before it is heard on the station, and share your input!

In Your Voice: record yourself saying "This is (your name) from (your city) and you are listening to DMPulse!" We'll then put your voice on-air in rotation for one year, so you will be able to hear yourself on the station. Imagine, slaving away at your desk at work, and hearing your own voice say "This is Bob from Duluth, and you are listening to DMPulse!"

Click the red link above to go to Survey Monkey and take the six question survey!

Favorite album of 2010?

This is the time of year when everyone rolls out their "best of 2010" list.

I suppose I could throw my two cents in on the topic. It hardly seems fair. My favorite releases of 2010 are pretty obvious to DMPulse listeners, just check out the station! More interesting to me is what are YOUR favorite albums on 2010? Share them in the comments here or on our Facebook Page or DMPulse's twitter.

Time to Get This Party Kickstarted!

If you believe in supporting the excellent artists we feature on DMPulse, and want to help us continue to introduce listeners to great new indie and alternative music, you will have opportunities to get involved in the coming weeks.  As a first move in that direction, take a look at Kickstarter.  Kickstarter.com helps rally financial support around specific projects, in essence "kick-starting" the creation of something.  Browse around and view the wonderful and creative projects, from film-makers and musicians seeking funds for their next project, to inventors needing to launch their idea.
I thought this Iphone holder project was cool (and look how successful!):

So, what would you like to help Kickstart for DMPulse?
Ideas:
- Help us launch a commercial-free stream that doesn't require a Live365 VIP membership?
- Help us get DMPulse t-shirts or other swag?
- Help us buy one CD a week in 2011.

Provide feedback on the above or share your own ideas by taking the Survey below:

The Making of the next DMPulse Logo - Part 1

For the past several weeks, I've been working with Andrew from Ozone Consulting to develop a new logo for DMPulse.  After several teleconferences, and quite a bit of back and forth, we are ready to unveil our four finalists for you to vote on!  That's right, the DMPulse audience gets to chose the new logo!  Before we get to the unveiling, I wanted to share some of the early versions so you can see the process.

Fairly early, we landed on a font that we liked pretty well.

But, something important to me is for our new logo to have a visual tie-in so you know easily what the logo is representing.  For example, a tire company logo that incorporates a wheel.  That is pretty challenging with an internet radio station.  What represents a radio station?  Andrew and I kicked around idea after idea...  We tried a microphone, but it looks too cartoon-y.

We tried earbuds in various states

We tried a boombox, but it's just too retro!

One brainstorm was to try to "visualize" DMPulse by using an actual image of the audio of our station "voice" saying DMPulse.  You'll see that incorporated here with one of our headphone versions.

None of the above made the cut, but they have helped get us to where we are now.  Keep an ear to the station, and an eye on this website, as we'll be rolling out finalists soon!

Share your thoughts on the logos above by emailing me at jay AT dmpulse.com!

Listener Survey

Recently, I used this space to talk about the struggles of internet radio stalwart WOXY.  All net radio stations, and many web-based services in general are struggling to stay alive.

So how is DMPulse doing?  In January, I paid the royalties for the year:  $2,000. I spend $50/month for new music, a music scheduling software package and hosting.  I receive $15-20/month in rewards from Live365.  Music downloads through the weekly e-newsletter and on this website have generated about $20 in revenue this year.

So why am I telling you this?

I believe that DMPulse listeners care about the station and want to see it continue.  And I am more-than-willing to continue to spend 15 hours a week on the station.  It really doesn't seem like work most of the time!

Many online "business models" are centered around keeping the site's content from people that aren't paying or guilting users into paying a small amount each month.

While those may work for some, I believe that many DMPulse listeners will support the station financially if they receive benefits beyond the great music you hear each day.

It centers around these questions:
Would I miss DMPulse if it were gone?
Have I discovered great music on DMPulse?
Does DMPulse make my day better?

Here's my thesis:
DMPulse listeners can listen for free.  If you answer 'yes' to the questions above, than I believe you should consider supporting DMPulse with your dollars.  While anyone can listen to DMPulse, I believe those that support it should receive something beyond the great station many of you listen to for 30 hours a week or more.

I am thinking about putting together "packages" at different levels of support.  So, a listener that gives $75 receives more than someone giving $25.

Each of these levels would have benefits associated.  Here's where you come in:  I need your help to determine what additional benefits supporters of the station receive.  Please go here to take another survey and give me your feedback on the ideas I have.

Thanks in advance for your help.  And know that I want to be able to continue to keep DMPulse going.  Together, we will come up with special benefits that will reward you for believing in the station.

As always, share your thoughts with me.

Thoughts on WOXY

Last week marked the shuttering of WOXY, the legendary broadcast-turned-internet ratio station.  While WOXY has survived previous trials, and may again rise from the ashes, it strikes me as blow to free internet radio, made by real live human beings.

One of the main selling point for fans of WOXY was something novel in the world of net radio--DJs.  Especially DJs that chose their own music.  I read this week that Pandora may account for 44% of all internet radio listening if payments to SoundExchange are a fair measure.  While there are real people categorizing the music for Pandora, your individual playlist isn't touched by human hands.  Their Music Genome Project is certainly fascinating, but many DMPulse listeners seem to have found the service to be cold and predictable.

Mark R. Collins, writing for the Huffington Post, stands in support of WOXY and poses the question:  "if Woxy.com, one of the first stations to move to an online-only broadcast, and arguably one of the most popular internet radio stations, isn't able to hack it even with commercial backing then what does the future of online radio hold?"

Here at DMPulse, we've had a great seven days.  Perhaps the best week listenership-wise in a few years.  Surely we have benefited from WOXY's demise as listeners are searching for a new indie rock station.  I think WOXY listeners will find something to like here, but Mr. Collins' question still remains.

Now streaming 128k

Over the weekend, DMPulse transitioned from streaming 64k to 128k.  With the change comes some new tunes to the playlist and the return of songs you haven't heard in a while.  Many thanks to everyone that gave thumbs up or thumbs down to the songs in the player window.  Your feedback helped me clear some songs off the playlist and to know which bands and tunes you are enjoying!  Stay tuned...

Survey #2 Results

The results are in on the second survey and we had even more listeners weigh in.  Here's what you said:

-DMPulse listeners listen because you love the music and discovering new songs & artists.

-You would change small things about the station.  Less Ben Folds, more old stuff, less old stuff, less Radiohead, more Radiohead.  You get the idea...

- For ideas:
Liked the Paypal "tip jar".  That is now on the website!
Didn't care for station swag.  Have too many t-shirts already?
Preferred music downloads to buying CDs
Loved the idea of putting together DMPulse music compilation CDs.  That one's on the list.  Coming in 2010, DMPulse Smooth Groves Volume #1? (think I'll need some help on the title)
There is interest in an e-newsletter.  Working on it...

Thanks to everyone who filled out the survey!
